As you requested, I’ve prepared some tips for you!
- Choose a good watercolor paper, 300gsm is excellent. - Don’t emphasize your outlines too much; choose where they are important, and for the others, press less hard with the pencil and work that line with the brush. - To soften things, you could consider drawing your lines with a colored pencil instead of a graphite pencil. It’s just a suggestion. - Pay attention to your reds. More generally, think about the path your eyes follow. The most important thing in the narrative of your image is the fact that the two characters are exchanging a gift. It’s them and the gift that should be highlighted. The rest should blend in. - Take inspiration from a color palette of a painting you like, one that has the atmosphere you want for your illustration. - To help with the atmosphere, you can start by applying a wash of a single color evenly over your paper before adding your colors. This will create the effect of a color filter. (Make sure the wash is dry before you start adding color, otherwise it will bleed.)

Le plus important dans la narration de ton image est le fait que les deux personnages s'échangent un présent. C'est eux et ce cadeau qui doivent être mis en avant. Le reste doit se fondre. - Inspire-toi d'une gamme de couleurs d'un tableau que tu aimes et qui auraient l'ambiance que tu souhaites pour ton illustration. - Tu peux pour t'aider dans l'ambiance, commencer par un jus d'une couleur que tu déposes uniformément sur ta feuille avant de faire ta couleur. Ca faire l'effet d'un filtre coloré (attends bien que le jus soit sec avant de commencer ta couleur, sinon ça va baver)

My sheet of paper is warping at the bottom, even though it’s 250 gsm. It’s lying flat under a pile of books ;) but I love working on this image, even if it requires a lot of work and patience.

Ma feuille gondole en bas pourtant c'est du 250 g elle est à plat sous une tonne de livre ;) mais j'adore travailler cette image même si cela demande un sacré boulot et de la patienceeeee
Indeed, watercolor painting isn’t easy, but we can already see that you’ve made progress since your previous drawing! :) The characters are much clearer now, but perhaps you could slightly intensify the background around them to better integrate them into the scene (I’ve included a quick example in the attached image). You don’t need to overdo it; a few touches of watercolor will be enough to unify the whole thing. :)
Regarding your paper buckling, there could be several reasons: you might have used too much water, which saturated the paper, or the paper might not be of good quality, or it might be thick but not specifically designed for watercolor.
If you want to continue using the same paper but are worried about it buckling, you can stretch the paper before painting: completely wet it, glue it with gummed tape onto a board, and let it dry flat before starting. It’s a bit time-consuming, but very effective.

Effectivement l'aquarelle ça n'est pas facile, mais on voit déjà que tu as fait des progrès depuis ton dessin précédent ! :) on voit beaucoup mieu les personnages mais peut être que tu pourrais légèrement intensifier le décor qui se trouve autour d'eux pour les ancrer dedans (je t'ai fait un rapide exemple dans l'image jointe) pas besoin d'avoir la main trop lourde, quelques touche d'aquarelle permettront d'unifier le tout :)
En ce qui concerne ton papier qui gondole, il peut y avoir plusieurs raisons : tu as utiliser beaucoup beaucoup d'eau et ça a fait saturer ton papier, ton papier n'est pas de bonne qualité ou c'est un papier épais mais pas adapté précisément à l'aquarelle.
Si tu souhaite garder le même papier pour la suite mais que tu as peur qu'il gondole tu peux tendre ton papier avant de peindre : humidifie-le complètement, colle-le avec du kraft gommé sur une planche, et laisse sécher à plat avant de commencer. C’est un peu long, mais très efficace.

I made some changes compared to my original sketch. I brought the elements closer together, thinking that it would make the composition less scattered and the scene more cozy. For the colors, I tried to give it a warm feel, but coloring is something I really struggle with. Overall, I'm surprised by the result because I didn't really believe it would turn out this way when I started.

J'ai apporté quelque modification par rapport à mon dessin de base. J'ai rapproché les éléments entre eux, j'ai pensé que ça ferait moins éparpier et que la scène serait plus cosy. Pour la couleur, j'ai essayé de donner un côté chaleureux mais la mise en couleur et quelque chose que j'ai réelement beaucoup de peine à faire. Dans l'ensemble je suis étonnée du rendu parce que j'y croyais pas réelement quand j'ai commencé.
What a lovely illustration! I actually agree with you; the decision to group the objects together is a good one. I would complete it by cropping the image a bit, removing part of the wall that could end up being wasted space. As for the color, I think you could add more contrast. This would make the light from the campfire more obvious. To do this, you could darken the shadow areas that you already have defined. Otherwise, it’s a very nice piece of work. Very well done!

Je la complèterais en recadrant un peu l'image, en éliminant une partie du mur qui pourrait finir par être de l'espace mort. Concernant la couleur, je pense que tu pourrais ajouter plus de contraste. Cela rendrait la lumière du feu de camp plus évidente. Pour ce faire, tu pourrais obscurcir les zones d'ombre que tu as déjà définies. Pour le reste, c'est un travail très agréable. Très bien fait !

For the upcoming lessons, I saw that we’ll be doing some retouching. I don’t necessarily have the budget for Photoshop, so would Krita be a good option? Or is there another software you’d recommend?

Pour la suite des cours j'ai vu qu'on allait faire des retouches, je n'ai pas forcément le budjet pour photoshop, est-ce que Krita pourrait faire l'affaire ? ou un autre logiciel à conseiller ?

Regarding your question about Photoshop: if you know how to use Krita, I suppose it could work. I also downloaded it to see its features and discovered that they have similarities, but they are organized in a very different way. This could cause some confusion. The recommendation is to familiarize yourself as much as possible with the software so that you can equate the processes.

D'ailleurs, je l'ai téléchargé pour observer ses fonctions, et j'ai découvert qu'ils ont des similarités, mais qu'ils sont organisés de manière très différente. Cela pourrait générer un peu de confusion. La recommandation est de te familiariser le plus possible avec le logiciel afin de pouvoir faire l'équivalence des processus.
