The first illustration (for children) is done with felt-tip pens, the second with colored pencils. I tried to recapture the style of the âMonster of Emotions,â but I didnât dare go too far with the color mixing.
The third one is done with a black felt-tip pen and colored pencils.
Iâm not sure what to think about it. I donât feel very comfortable with the open lines, but I think the work is more interesting. At first, I wanted to add the color only to the string of lights, but then I went wild on the Christmas tree!
This is very interesting what youâre telling me.
First of all, my eyes were immediately drawn to your open-line Christmas tree. Your approach to color is perfect. Indeed, it takes time and is mentally exhausting to reflect and concentrate. This open-line style is really nice and certainly requires more work because itâs more realistic.
The two images above work very well, especially the one with the felt-tip pen. Itâs effective.
I didnât see that you had replied (I think I must have skipped over the email).
Thanks for your comments. Youâre right, I didnât use an image or photo as a reference for the landscape, and it shows. I looked at Ernest and Celestine; the colors are very soft. I also noticed that the lines arenât as open as they seem; in reality, I have the illusion that the lines arenât fully finished, when in fact theyâre just very fine.
Iâm very familiar with Petit Loup (I read them over and over when I was little!), and I see what you mean about the well-defined and clean shapes.
After making the corrections, I wanted to create a version using pen and ink, which I then colored with colored pencils and watercolor in some areas. I think I might have overdone it in certain places, and Iâm not sure. Also, one of the arms seems too short to me. Iâm looking forward to starting the next chapter.
Thank you, yes, I will keep that in mind. I thought the drawing was too harsh and not suitable, and I also used Bristol paper, which isn't ideal for pencils...
Here are 3 sketches related to the chapter on understanding the world of childrenâs illustration.
Iâm having trouble deciding which age group interests me the most. So I created all three. For the 5 and 8-year-old age groups, I think the rule of thirds might not be the best approach? Thank you in advance for your feedback; I hope it helps me decide. :)

Salut Camille,

Hello Bydouille,
This is very interesting what youâre telling me.

This open-line style is really nice and certainly requires more work because itâs more realistic.
The two images above work very well, especially the one with the felt-tip pen. Itâs effective.
I donât know which path youâll choose in the future, but hereâs what you need to work on:
- Closed lines: pay close attention to the shapes. Make sure everything is clean. (Research by looking at books for young children, like Trotro the donkey, Petit Ours brun, TchoupiâŠ)
- Open lines: you need a little more documentation of reality to help you compose your images, and then you can let your creativity flow. You can also be inspired by books like Ernest and Célestine. Even for the color approach!
Hello Bydouille,

Bon we

Hello HélÚne,
Itâs never easy to find a balance between two techniques when you want to combine them.
Here, you should use a softer color for your ink to avoid this strong contrast.
Try it out separately by drawing a gift, for example. Use brown ink or black ink diluted, so itâs gray. It will be softer!
Itâs easy with a pen; otherwise, youâll need other fine-tipped markers:)

Have a good evening.

I completely agree! I use a lot of bristol paper for my ink drawings and some sketches. Itâs not suitable at all for other techniques.

Hello Nanoue,

The version for 0-3 year olds is very cute and works well. Iâm going to take a look at the others!

Nice!
Indeed, I see what you mean regarding the composition. It is central.
Rest assured, itâs still successful!
Have you already seen âMom, I missed the plane againâ?
At the end, the little boy finds himself in front of the large Christmas tree in NYC. To show the immensity of the tree compared to the child, the tree is centered in the frame. This gives it an even more imposing look, and we forget what is happening around it.
Otherwise, it will be a bit off to the side.
The composition serves the narrative of your image. Itâs up to you to choose what you want to tell:)
