Based on my personal experience, I started with a graphic tablet with a screen, which allowed me to immediately enjoy a good level of comfort and see my lines clearly. I chose a less well-known brand, Gaomon, which was decent and cost around âŹ300. It was pretty good for starting out, even though it had a few technical drawbacks.
But I quickly started having wrist problems, probably due to the angle. It became a chore to draw on it đ
Then I switched to an iPad Pro, which is quite large and expensive, but I donât regret it! The portability and ease of transport are great, and the stylus glides smoothly. And since then, I havenât had any problems drawing!
It was a huge investment, but it was worth it for me, and I donât think Iâll go back to using a graphic tablet.
Thank you for your feedback!
Regarding the tilt, thatâs why I recommend using an arm for tablets with screens, which allows you to easily position them at the correct distance, orientation, and tilt. Personally, I canât imagine using my Cintiq without one (itâs a 27-inch model, so itâs the size of a small TV and weighs almost 10 kg...).
I must admit that I havenât spent much time trying the iPad and Procreate. But it is indeed the benchmark, and for good reason. The ease of use is difficult to quantify technically, but it is often the most important factor.
I have the opportunity to upgrade my computer monitor, and I would like to get your opinion on this model:
https://www.amazon.fr/BenQ-PD2700Q-Pouces-REC-709-Technologie/dp/B01K2210GS
Is it suitable for starting with digital painting? I would like to clarify that I am a beginner in this field, and it will be used primarily for learning, but I would eventually like to become a professional.
Do you have any other recommendations?
I keep hearing about 4K resolution, but that quickly increases the price.
Itâs an IPS panel (which prioritizes color quality over the number of frames per second, making it advantageous for image editing), and in my experience, BenQ is a good brand.
In fact, you can even find good models for half the price (but probably not in 1440p and 27 inches).
Ultimately, itâs up to you to decide if you want to invest that much in your monitor, but it should definitely give you good colors and a more than comfortable workspace.
Thank you very much for all these details, which are very helpful in guiding our choices. Iâve been using Wacom forever, and I also have a Huion, which is very good, and the Iskn Repaper, which is amazing.
Since I do a lot of traditional drawing, Iâd like to have a tablet with a screen so I can recapture the pleasure of the drawing motion. I tried it on the Surface Pro, but I find that itâs too slippery! Is there a tablet where the feel of the stylus on the screen is closer to that of traditional drawing? Or is there something I can put on it to make the stylus glide less?
Thanks again, and I look forward to discovering the other courses! ;-)
Hi! To my knowledge, no tablet compatible with traditional drawing software offers a screen with a âpaper-likeâ surface. Ladoris mentioned the âremarkableâ brand tablets on the blog, but they are expensive and not aimed at artists, but rather at note-taking, brainstorming, etc.
Currently, I would say that the issue of the screenâs slippery surface is an inconvenience to be overcome. Beyond the difficulty of creating a rough surface that is also transparent enough for a screen, also keep in mind that a smooth surface means less friction, which in turn means less wear on the stylus tip and the screen itself. It is possible that this will change in the coming years.
Thank you very much, itâs much clearer now :-) thanks to your lessons, Iâm starting to get used to it. Iâll stick with the Huion for now, which is a bit more ârough,â and wait for technological advancements ;-)
In this chapter, you discuss technical specifications but without providing any reference figures or minimum requirements for RAM or processor capacity.
Would it be possible for you to provide some figures to help us make the best choice?
Hello,
Itâs a bit difficult to give precise figures, as software and hardware evolve over time.
However, I can give you some information about Photoshop in 2021: it requires a lot of RAM, and currently recommends a minimum of 8GB of RAM, with 16GB being preferable. And even then, when I work with large documents, I would love to have 32GB!
In terms of processor, 2GHz 64-bit.
Not much is required in terms of graphics card: 2GB of VRAM and DX12 support.
However, these requirements depend on the software you use: most are significantly lighter than Photoshop (except perhaps Corel Painter, as it manages a lot of simulations to recreate the effects of organic painting); but I suggest you check the system requirements page on the website of the software of your choice.
So, I'm really into digital painting, and I've decided to upgrade my graphics tablet. My old one was an XP-PEN, which I think is a bit outdated. I don't have the exact model number anymore... The screen is about 22 cm by 13.5 cm (I measured it with a ruler, so it's not very precise). Anyway, I'd like to invest in a new tablet, and I'm tempted by the larger models, but I'm a bit hesitant because I'm afraid it might be too big... that I'm not skilled enough to make the most of that kind of equipment. I'm turning 30 soon, and my family wants to get me a nice gift, so is this a good idea for someone who draws moderately well but is passionate about it? Are the two monitors recommended in addition to the tablet? Because if I get a large tablet, I think it will take up a lot of space... are the two monitors essential?
Thank you for reading, and I hope to get some answers soon!
Hi! The second screen isn't really necessary; I mainly use it to display references or to navigate through my files, but it's essentially to save time in a professional setting. If you want to treat yourself in a semi-professional setting, you can get a 22-24 inch tablet (between 40 and 50 cm wide) without having to deal with a second screen. Even though these types of tablets are a good compromise between what you already have and the larger tablet models with screens (the 27 and 32 inch ones), I would still recommend getting an arm so you can move, rotate, and tilt your tablet as you see fit.
The question of your drawing skill level isn't really relevant in my opinion; it's more about your resources, the time you spend on it, and the comfort it provides. If you already find it pleasant to work on a tablet with a screen, switching to a larger model to increase your comfort for drawing makes perfect sense!

https://www.amazon.fr/BenQ-PD2700Q-Pouces-REC-709-Technologie/dp/B01K2210GS
Auriez-vous d'autres références à me conseiller ?
