Hi, great course, but it definitely requires practice. I'm still struggling with the proportions. It's more or less okay from the 3/4 overhead view, but from the underside view, it's a disaster.
Anyway, donât worry: itâs normal. This mental exercise doesnât come naturally; it takes a lot of practice. But the good thing is that now that youâre aware of it, youâll start working on it without even realizing it, because all aspects of drawing are interconnected. Youâll improve naturally.

Hi Greg, I have a quick question about isometric perspective (around 1 minute 15 seconds): you say that in an isometric perspective, the 4 angles of a cube will be equal... But in that case, they would each be 90°, so the view would be from above and there would be no perspective? It seems to me that isometric perspective is actually characterized by the absence of a vanishing point, and therefore some lines are perfectly parallel to each other... Can you confirm (or correct) this for me?

Youâre right about the lack of vanishing points. In fact, when I say that the angles will remain equal, Iâm not talking about each individual angle in relation to the others (otherwise, we would end up in the situation you describe, in a top view đ), but rather that the depth will not affect these angles.
For example, Iâll take a cube and duplicate it. Iâll put the second one behind the first. And Iâll repeat this with a third cube, and so on, endlessly... Depending on how I set up my perspective, we can see very strong distortions depending on how far away (or close) the observer is.
But in the case of an isometric perspective, there will be no distortion. So some lines will remain parallel forever, and the angles of a cube will always be equal... No matter how many times you reproduce it in space and depth!
I donât know if Iâm explaining this clearly; you tell me :-)
Itâs so much more methodical this way! It helps you visualize how objects of different sizes fit into a space, I think Iâm going to go practice at the aquarium, maybe with the sharks, haha.
Excellent idea, but itâs quite an ambitious project! The difficulty with aquariums is that you gradually lose your sense of space as you watch the fish move around freely.
That being said, it will give your eye and your brain a good workout (and itâs also relaxing).

Quoi qu'il en soit, ne t'inquiĂšte pas : c'est normal. Cette gymnastique mentale ne vient pas d'un claquement de doigts : ça demande pas mal de pratique. Mais l'avantage, c'est que maintenant que tu as ça en tĂȘte tu vas commencer Ă bosser dessus sans t'en rendre compte, car tous les aspects du dessin sont liĂ©s entre eux. Tu vas progresser naturellement.

Tu as raison pour l'absence de points de fuite. En fait, quand je prĂ©cise que les angles resteront Ă©gaux je ne parle pas de chacun des angles, entre eux (sinon on va se retrouver dans le cas que tu dĂ©cris, en vue du dessus đ) mais plutĂŽt du fait que la profondeur n'aura aucune incidence sur ces angles.
Exemple, je prends un cube que je duplique. Je mets le deuxiÚme derriÚre le premier. Et je recommence avec un troisiÚme cube, et ainsi de suite jusqu'à l'infini... Suivant la mise en place de ma perspective, on peut assister à des déformations trÚs fortes en fonction de l'éloignement (ou du rapprochement) de l'observateur.
Mais dans le cadre d'une perspective isométrique, il n'y aura pas de déformation. Donc certains traits resteront éternellement parallÚles, et les angles d'un cube seront toujours égaux... Peut importe le nombre de fois que tu le reproduira dans l'espace et la profondeur !
Je ne sais pas du tout si j'explique ça clairement, c'est toi qui me dis :-)

Excellente idée, mais c'est une tùche ambitieuse ! La difficulté avec les aquarium c'est que l'on perd un peu la notion d'espace à force de voir bouger les poissons librement.
Cela Ă©tant dit, cela va faire travailler ton Ćil et ton cerveau Ă vitesse grand V (et en plus c'est reposant).
