I like your exercise, I see that you've tried several different things and that was exactly the goal. Well done!
There's just one point I'd like to raise: in the two drawings at the bottom, the gap between the thick and thin lines is very large (e.g. drawing 2: the legs and the lower body, e.g. drawing 3: the hands). Personally, I would have reserved this difference for large illustrations where it would have been necessary to show very distant planes. This way, it would have helped to establish a strict visual hierarchy between the elements of the image. So the principle is not at all to be discarded!
But in the context of a drawing like this, it gives the impression that some parts are somewhat invisible.
Indeed, the 3 attracts the most attention because you have added values to it (which work rather well, by the way).
That said, in terms of pure line values, I would opt for a mix of 1 and 2 (you would keep the light lines that are light on both, and you would emphasize where they are bolder, on one or the other. I'm not sure if I'm making myself clear đ)
But in any case, it all works well!
However, be careful not to have too glaring a difference in values in a small area (e.g., on No. 2, between the sleeve and the arm), as this tends to draw a lot of attention (contrast attracts the eye, by definition) for little benefit đ
Is this an issue you are encountering exclusively on this exercise?
Specifically, the exercise and the support I provide aim to practice drawing in a way other than the "ligne claire" style (= a drawing whose line keeps the same thickness throughout, without any variation).
Note well that ligne claire is not a flaw in itself; it's just one of the many ways to proceed. And it's precisely the other direction that we are looking to explore with this lesson!
In the support material, the rabbit is drawn with ligne claire. It's there for you to draw over, trying to give "stroke values" to see what works, or what does not. And to start gauging whether or not you are comfortable with the process!
1) If things are still not clear, we will continue discussing until we find what's blocking you.
2) In the meantime, a small intermediate exercise: open a copy of each comic book you own, and try to "rank" them from "strongest stroke values" to "weakest stroke values". (unless you have 35,000 comic books at home... And then Ok... Not all! :-p ) Because I suspect that your block might stem from your lack of experience with the subject. (This is said with no malice, and I could very well be mistaken!)
3) And if you haven't done so already, move on to the next step! With drawing, everyone has their own pace, and it is not uncommon for things to become clearer afterward :-)
Hang in there!
Greg
Salut Choukynette !
To answer your question, Iâm having problems with all the subjects. I canât understand what you are asking us to do in the exercises. Iâm always off the mark. When I listen to the class, itâs like thereâs a wall in my brain, I canât progress.
I donât understand where my blockage is coming from. Also, as I said in my introduction, I'm more than a beginner and I donât know where to start. I feel lost, I have no foundation. And it's really very difficult. I feel that I am motivated and that this motivation does not decrease even though I donât know what to do at all.
In any case, thank you for your response and for your courses which are really very clear and interesting. đ
First and foremost, don't let yourself be intimidated. Nothing that we do here is beyond your reach. As I say in the first class, contrary to popular belief, drawing is for everyone. Sometimes we just need a little boost.
Secondly, don't dwell on any obstacles. If you're struggling with the exercises, it's not a big deal. Not doing them doesn't prevent you from following the next lesson ^^ so keep moving forward in the training!
Maybe your discomfort comes from the fact that you find it hard to see the purpose of the exercises. In which case, you'll probably appreciate the summaries đ
So:
- don't hesitate to move forward with the lessons. Go all the way to the end!
- Don't be too hard on yourself. As I said, everyone progresses at their own pace and that's a good thing, it's one of the advantages of online training đ
- Once you have reached the end of the training, go back to the beginning and see if the exercises speak to you more. Things will likely seem more concrete by then.
No worries, copying is also an excellent exercise. So you did two in one with that one ^^
But you know, this rabbit is just an excuse I use to practice. The important thing is that you think about it regularly, so you can do it with any drawing you want!

Greg

Here are my 4 rabbit attempts.
I feel that it's the 3rd one that makes the strongest impression, what do you think?

Greg

It seems I have a little problem. I don't understand what we are being asked to do.
Yet I watch and listen to the videos all the way through. It seems like the information hits a wall and prevents me from understanding.
How can I fix this problem? Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?
Thank you for your replies and good advice.
Have a nice day.

(sauf si tu as 35 000 BD à la maison...

Courage !

Thank you!
You're doing great work :-) For this kind of exercise, the only way to improve is by doing a lot of them. And you need to pay attention to:
1) the changes it implies on the drawing and
2) Your personal tastes, and what you find stylish or not. ^^
You'll see, soon you wonât even have to think about it anymore!
