Getting Started with Watercolor

In this first module, Clara introduces you to watercolor and all the unique characteristics that make it so special. You will discover the essential materials to get started, with practical advice on choosing your brushes, papers, and colors without getting lost or spending unnecessarily.

First Steps and Essential Basics

Learn the essential first steps of watercolor painting. You'll see how to dilute your colors to achieve various effects, and use brush pressure to create varied strokes. Simple and fundamental techniques to start on the right foot.

Mix and Play with Colors

29 min

This module is dedicated to mastering colors and backgrounds. You will learn to create your own mixes, to break down certain colors to achieve more natural shades, and to experiment with blends and gradients. Finally, you will discover how to achieve a uniform wash, an essential basis for setting up your backgrounds or preparing your illustrations. A way to quickly expand your palette.

Overlapping Techniques

Discover the two main layering techniques unique to watercolor. You will learn to paint wet on dry to achieve sharp and precise lines, and then to work wet on wet to create diffuse, spontaneous effects rich in textures. Two complementary approaches that open the door to endless creative possibilities.

Putting into Practice

50 min

In this final module, you will put into practice all the techniques we've covered previously by creating a complete illustration. Before that, you will learn how to preserve the whites in order to play with light and add depth to your illustrations. Step by step, you will create a watercolor landscape by combining dilutions, washes, layering, and light effects. A conclusion that allows you to consolidate what you've learned and leave with a creation you can be proud of.
