Thatâs great! These things are complicated, but thatâs what makes them interesting! With a three-point perspective, it creates an amazing effect! Well done, Iâm also practicing this kind of thing, because itâs one of the things I enjoy looking at. I agree, itâs difficult, but I find it much more interesting than a character seen from the front and in a static pose! Sincere congratulations!
I think it looks good, well done! It doesnât seem out of place at first glance, but I wonder if the left hand and the end of the left forearm shouldnât be a bit larger, because it seems to me that they are currently the same size as the other side, which, conversely, is moving away from the viewer. :)
After that, foreshortened perspectives are really difficult to draw, and it requires both good perspective management and good anatomical knowledge. No wonder you had some trouble!
I saw this video of an artist who talks about a technique he uses to help him draw foreshortened perspectives on characters (among other things). Itâs a bit of a brute-force technique, but itâs quite fun and intuitive to use! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJWLaDSNBAI&t=89s
Yeah, I should have paid more attention to the scale; I was too focused on the shortcuts. Thanks for the YouTube channel, by the way. Iâll check it out.
It looks like you had a bit of trouble with the woman on the rightâs hair, especially around the ear, and the mouths seem a little âstiff.â Maybe itâs because the teeth are a little too prominent?
But in any case, itâs really good, well done! Youâre making enormous progress, itâs impressive đđ
Thanks for the feedback, and yes, Nora, I agree with you; the hair isnât âsoftâ enough, even on the left. The strand is still too static. Iâm trying to work on the hair in large sections to avoid the âspaghettiâ effect, but itâs all coming out too rigid. I need to figure it out, so Iâll keep practicing!
And yes, I also agree about the second face; it was an Asian woman (I donât know if itâs obvious), with a very pale complexion and a light shining on her forehead, so the reading between the nose and cheek was⊠extremely complicated, but I had a lot of fun đ.
Hey! Thanks for the feedback, Iâm glad you think itâs cool. I like it too, even though thereâs always room for improvement. Weâll see how it goes in a year. ^^
Unfortunately, spelling and typos are a common occurrence for me; itâs a much more annoying problem than COVID-19. đ
This face is really good, even though I donât know who it is, but I donât know all the current popular celebrities⊠Anyway, it confirms what I thought: I need to work on my technique for drawing faces. Iâve made progress, but itâs not quite perfect yet. Well done, in any case, for the face and everything else.
Salut Jojo,
Awesome work, Jojo, I can see youâre putting in a lot of effort! Glad to hear youâre having fun with it ;)
Were you inspired by the recent announcement of the next Assassinâs Creed game, which will be set among the Vikings? Haha
Otherwise, Iâm guessing the face is based on an actress from the Vikings series? I donât watch it, so Iâm not sure ^^
Anyway, it looks great. I like this kind of study that explores the overall universe! I would have liked to see a few quick color washes on the rest of it to give it a bit more volume, but overall, it looks really good and fun to draw. I especially like the details of the horn.
For the next piece in this universe, would you consider stepping outside of your comfort zone and creating a big, burly Viking with lots of hair all over?
Thank you, and yes, the artwork really got me excited (it was a friend who gave me the reference), and youâre right about the actress; sheâs indeed from the Vikings series â youâre spot on!
Now that you mention it, adding a few quick flat colors would have been a good addition. Thanks again for the great feedback, Tobias; your support is appreciated and encourages me to work even harder.
Honestly, Iâm trying, but my brain has installed a filter against male characters.
đOne thing is certain: I will create some. Right now, Iâm working on the areas where Iâm weakest (values/character), so male characters will be coming soon.
Honestly, itâs amazing! I think the lighting is very well done, and the effect on the hands is great. It really makes you want to see it in color now đ.
Especially since, judging by the values, it looks like all you need to do is paint the color on top without having to worry about the lighting, since thatâs already taken care of :)
:P Thanks, I spent a lot of time on it. I wanted to do a review of my training and values (I did a lot of research on all sorts of things before this).
I think I might have overdone the highlights on the right, making it a bit too heavy, right? As for the colors, I don't know; it's going to take me a long time :'D. Actually, I think the values are good too, even if everything can be improved.
It also seems to me that there's a slight loss when transitioning from grayscale to color. If I'm not mistaken, the colors interact with each other and therefore slightly distort the values, or maybe I'm just not very good at it... something to think about ^^
Anyway, if you want to have fun doing a colorization, you can. I can host the PSD file if you want.
Have a good day and good luck with your work, Tobias! đ
P.S. I learned something with this study: the separation of materials is achieved through several differences in value (I knew the theory, but I hadn't fully understood it). Also, atmospheric perspective applies on a smaller scale, for example, with hair.
The light rays donât bother me. However, now that I think about it, it would be nice if they originated a little further down the hand, because right now they start from the hand and also extend along the entire arm, even though the arm isnât a light source. What might be interesting (and it seems like youâve done something similar with the right hand) would be for the rays to emanate only from the space between the fingers. But itâs just an idea; Iâm not sure it would look good!
Iâd be happy to have the file; if I ever need something to work on, I could try coloring it.
Great work, as always! A few comments (I really have to look closely each time because, firstly, Iâm a beginner, so itâs hard to spot whatâs wrong or not, and secondly, because I think your work is of good quality, so itâs not that obvious!):
- Wouldnât the foreground benefit from being a bit darker? This would help to separate it more from whatâs happening in the background, especially since the distance between the foreground and the rest is quite large.
- We can clearly see where the light is coming from, no problem there, but some areas could benefit from being more brightly lit, I think especially the crest at the top of your characterâs head on the left. The effect could possibly be due to a cloud blocking the light, but given that your sky looks relatively clear, it doesnât quite fit. đ
Apart from that, I donât see anything else⊠except that youâve been using a lot of grayscale lately, and Iâm looking forward to seeing some color! đ
Otherwise, I understand about the layers; on the illustration of the robot with the galaxy butter, I did absolutely ANYTHING with the layers, and as a result, finishing the illustration took me a good 3 hours, whereas a job like that normally takes me 1 hour...
Great work, as always. The critiques are complex, but I think itâs a fantastic exercise in visual storytelling.
-I donât think making the foreground darker would improve it, but making the background brighter would. :D
-Yes, I messed up that part *ugh, I see it now*. I was so focused on making the mountains sharp and adding the mist that I forgot about the subtle light that should be on the ridge. Good catch! I should have taken my time and reviewed my image more carefully.
Yes, I use quite a few shades of gray. I got stuck on an illustration because I didnât fully understand the values and made some poor color choices. Itâs quite frustrating, especially since I put a lot of work into the background. *But weâll get over it.*

Especially since, judging by the values, it looks like all you need to do is paint the color on top without having to worry about the lighting, since thatâs already taken care of :)
