You're doing quite well with the front view, you just need a bit more skull (the skull widens slightly).
You have more issues with the side and the three-quarters view.
In the three-quarters view, it's mainly the edge of the face that's off. We're missing the eye socket's hollow, the cheekbone, and the bulge of the eyebrow ridge. These elements will help you place the facial features later on. I also see you're not sure how to connect the head to the neck. Basically, you have a three-stroke line in the three-quarters view. I'm attaching a correction to show you; be careful not to curve the central axis too much, which places the chin a bit too far back ^^
For the side view, it will improve with the class on the nose in particular. We see the same misunderstanding about "how to connect the head to the neck". Here you tend to place the ear way too far back. You should know that from the side, the junction between the ear and the face is located about halfway across the head (in width). So on the male face, the ear is waaaaay too far back, on the child version there's not one at all, and on the girl version, it's much closer to correct, it just lacks a bit of skull behind for the ear to be properly placed at halfway ^^ You also have the chin slightly too far forward for the side view. One last remark: the neck is located a bit toward the back because the spinal column must go up to the skull. And since the column is right against the back, totally at the back of the body, you also feel it at the back of the neck, so the neck goes backwards (I made a little diagram to illustrate).
I'm attaching a correction with all this. Take the time to work on it a bit more and move on to the next lessons which will allow you to see the rest of the facial elements, especially the nose and mouth which are useful when doing the side view ^^
Oh, it's all so tiny! Don't hesitate to draw in a larger scale, it will also allow you to add more details and better understand things ^^
From what I can see it looks quite good. Be careful with symmetry in profile view, you tend to twist the face slightly diagonally upwards to the right. The three-quarter view needs a minor adjustment, I'll show you with the image below ^^ But otherwise, it's very good đ Don't hesitate to practice more on the three-quarter views, you've only done one and it's the most complicated angle to manage :)
It's quite uneven across each of the characters, generally you do well with one view, but you struggle with the others, yet it's never the same view for all three characters.
For example, for the man, the front view is very nice; for the girl, the side profile works well; and for the child, the three-quarter view is not bad.
If you were consistently successful with the same view regardless of the model, I would think that you understand the mechanics well. But this isn't the case here, so I think you'll need to practice to become more comfortable with everything ^^
Given the variations between the different models, I'm going to send you a correction for each of them ^^
Let's start with the man:
- The front view is very good, I have nothing to criticize ^^
- In the profile, the chin is gigantic and the ears have shrunk. You've also slightly increased the size of the eyes, but we'll cover that in upcoming lessons. There's also a lack of skull at the back, which is a recurrent problem in all three profiles you've done. So, a little mnemonic tip: the junction between the ear and the jaw is roughly at the halfway point of the head in the profile view.
- In the three-quarter view, you've curved the central line of the face too much, causing the chin to recede too far back. I won't dwell on the nose, mouth, and eyes, as we'll cover them in upcoming lessons, but itâs not too bad apart from this chin misalignment ^^
For the girl, there are proportional changes all over.
- From the front, you've made her face very, very wide, with eyes that are very far apart (you can fit more than one eye in the space between them). You decided to place the nose and mouth very close to the eyes, which tends to make the face look very youthful, but why not? There is also a lack of skull and I find the ears a bit small.
- From the side, you did well, it's rather successful, mainly lacking some skull, and be careful with changing proportions again (the ears and eyes once more). It seems to be a recurring element: you decrease the size of the ears from the side and increase the size of the eyes, you will need to watch out for that ^^
- From 3/4, the skull is also missing, you placed the chin quite well, however, all the proportions have changed. The face is significantly narrower, with much smaller eyes, a much longer nose as a result, and a square jaw, where it was pointy/triangular before. The ears have decreased even more compared to the profile version. Be sure to keep the same characteristics throughout ^^
I feel like you had a lot more difficulty with this one. Where I still perceive a certain structure in the other two, here it seems like you're not quite sure where you're going. You've also completely disregarded the typical proportions of children, such as: large eyes, close to the nose, towards the bottom of the head. None of the three versions conform to that, which results in a character, but not a child.
- From the front, aside from the issue with proportions, it holds up quite well. It lacks some skull, but otherwise the symmetry is not bad and it would make a good female face ^^ More coherent than the one you did for the lady, which consequently, is more childlike (bigger eyes and closer nose, she looks much younger than the child paradoxically).
- In profile, I see the same proportion changes as with the lady and the gentleman (eyes grow and ears shrink). It also lacks skull and the jaw is too square.
- In the 3/4 view it's not bad, you've again shrunk the ears and the chin recedes a bit too much again, but otherwise it's again issues stemming from the proportions that are not childlike and the lack of skull ^^
I am therefore sending you the final correction.
Faces are very complicated and require great rigor and concentration. Take your time to do them well, constantly compare to other views you've made, practice by copying faces of a character you like from different angles, etc. Train your eye and donât rush ^^
Good luck o/
Enfin l'enfant !
Hello, here are my faces, and right next to each one, you can see what it represents. I hope itâs clear enough đ
As for the one in the upper right corner, I thought it looked a bit too feminine, and I originally wanted it to be masculine, so I tried adding hair and changing the face, but Iâm not really sure what to think of it? đ
Thank you in advance for taking the time to give us feedback!
To start, your faces look really good!
I think they work very well overall, but wouldn't you say that two are missing? ^^
The Ÿ views aren't the easiest, that's true, but you'll see that it's very useful to know how to draw them because you'll end up drawing almost exclusively in that perspective. ^^
In real life, we rarely see people only from the front or in profile, haha.
I don't have much else to say about your work :)
The faces of the child and the woman are very nice.
The front and profile views of the man are good too.
The Ÿ view of the man is very good. If I were to nitpick, I would say that his right jaw isn't "square" enough for a "virile" type of man.
The profile in the upper right corner, I think it works very well :)
I understand why you think it's too feminine, but don't forget that even if it doesn't have all the basic characteristics of a "virile man," it works very well for a young boy or a teenage/young adult male character.
I'm thinking of characters like Rin Okumura from "Blue Exorcist," SĂŽma Yukihira from "Food Wars," or, more retro, Ranma from "Ranma1/2."
Besides, I really like the fact that the line from the nose to the chin is slightly angled in that profile.
That makes it work even better! :D
If you do that on the other profiles, you'll see that they will work better too ^^
I'm just pointing out that it's not mandatory.
It all depends on what you want to achieve in terms of style in your "manga" drawings :)
Remember that each manga artist has a style that is unique to them, haha.
However, it should remain an artistic trait and not a technical constraint ^^
Finally, just pay attention to your skull shapes, which aren't big enough. Humans have large brains, and the younger you are, the more pronounced the "big head" effect is :)
That's it! It's still a very good piece of work, so keep it up! :D
Salut Lise_thg !
Your drawings are pretty good!
The childâs face is the most successful one: D
I see a few mistakes, but nothing insurmountable. ^^
To start, the heads of your characters generally lack volume.
The back of the head should be much rounder, like a ball. :)
Iâve drawn a red circle, which might help you visualize it.
Feel free to use this trick. ^^
The childâs head works well!
Next, in the manâs profile, the neck is too close to his chin. You need to move it back and center it in relation to the head.
This issue is not present in the woman and the child.
All the front-facing faces work very well in terms of shape, which is great!
A very personal method, to avoid making things too complicated, is to take a ruler and draw two straight, perpendicular lines to use as reference points for the face. :)
For each view: front, profile, and Ÿ.
This way, you can be sure that everything is properly aligned. ^^
You donât have to follow this technique, but I think it might simplify things for you when youâre starting out.
You can also curve your reference lines, as in the tutorial, but it has to be very subtle, otherwise the face will quickly become unbalanced.
This is noticeable in your Ÿ view of the woman, where the chin goes too far to the right.
The manâs front-facing face is really good!
Maybe just refine the jawline a bit, but thatâs all. :)
Your drawings are a very good start! However, there are still some things to work on:)
Overall, your front-facing drawings are really good. I can see that you understand the idea of proportions for distinguishing the 3 classes of characters ^^. Just pay attention to the child's head, which is too flattened on top.
For the profile view, however, there are some shortcomings, but that's okay because we're here to improve:D. First of all, your profile characters have skulls that are far too flattened, which gives their heads an "egg" shape, and that's not what we want. My advice to fix this is to draw a circle (in red on the correction) with a compass, which will create the shape of the skull. When you're starting out, it's easier to do it this way, I think :). In my opinion, a profile head can be broken down into 3 parts, the first of which is the famous circle. I've given you an example on the correction. Practice doing the same for the man and the child:)
Finally, the Ÿ view. This is the most difficult at first, but you'll see that it's the one we draw the most, because in manga, characters are never always facing forward or in profile ^^. First of all, his skull is also too flattened :). Then, in a Ÿ view, the part of the face that is furthest from us should be the one that takes up the least space on the face because of the perspective. In your drawing, if you cut the face in half in the middle, you can see that the two sides are almost the same size, as if the face were facing forward. That's why his right cheek is too wide compared to the left :). You need to pay close attention to this.

Here are my first sketches from the manga course. I am satisfied with some views, others not.
For example, the profile of the child bothers me particularly but I can't seem to fix it. (the shape of the skull?)
I await your opinion
Man's face

- From the front, you've made her face very, very wide, with eyes that are very far apart (you can fit more than one eye in the space between them).

Bon courage o/

Remember that each manga artist has a style that is unique to them, haha.
However, it should remain an artistic trait and not a technical constraint ^^
Finally, just pay attention to your skull shapes, which aren't big enough. Humans have large brains, and the younger you are, the more pronounced the "big head" effect is :)
That's it! It's still a very good piece of work, so keep it up! :D

Good job overall! :D

Hello Amira!
That's it :D
