I didnât initially post a âsolutionâ because I was afraid that most people would just glance at it and think they didnât need to practice, since they already had an idea of the result.
The reason for this is that the most important thing to understand is that the process is what matters, not the final result, as I often mention in the lessons.
That being said, I will post one or two examples of this kind of work to clearly show how I do this research, in a calm environment, away from the cameras ;-)
In the meantime, I strongly encourage you to show me your work so that I can give you some feedback, if youâre interested!
Well, there you have it!!! My sketches look like something a 3-year-old would draw. Of course, I erased and crumpled my paper, and of course, my sketch has lots of lines...!!! Hmm!!! Back to work before the next lesson!!! I'm going to review this lesson tirelessly (because there's a lot of information to absorb!!!) until I understand it and my sketches are at least somewhat presentable, because right now, Peugeot (if it's even one!) isn't going to hire me to design their next car, haha! Many thanks for this very challenging but highly informative lesson!
Hi Christelle, you should normally be able to upload your images here, but thereâs a small bug at the moment. I think it will be fixed soon. In the meantime, you can share your images in the forum if you want. Have a good evening.
But donât worry, itâs much less strict than technical drawing. :-p The goal here isnât to create a perfect rendering, but rather to develop a process that will help you better understand your subject.
Try to think of it as taking notes: you simply want to extract useful information, thatâs all!
I have to admit that Iâm feeling a bit frustrated⊠^^ I just finished carefully going through your course on analyzing and observing objects, but I realize after many attempts that Iâm unable to properly separate the volumes⊠and itâs even worse in perspective. How do you do it? Do you try to draw them layer by layer?
For example, would it be possible to show us how you âbroke downâ the car in the course material? Itâs really intriguing!
In any case, thank you so much for these courses, which are simply amazing!
I understand what you mean by âdrawing by planes,â but thatâs not exactly how I approach it. In short, hereâs how I do it (using a side view as an example):
- I look at the object and ask myself, âWhat is its largest volume?â For the car, I think it would be the cabin.
- What is the shape of that volume? I would say a large rectangle, which I then draw.
- What is its second largest volume?
- And so on.
And I always keep in mind that the most important thing isnât necessarily the result, but rather the process that will help me better understand how the object is constructed, what its proportions are, etc.
If youâre really struggling with this, know that it wonât prevent you from moving on to the next lessons :-) So thereâs no need to get discouraged!
And if it helps, Iâm currently working on creating very detailed corrections for each of the exercises in the course.
In the meantime, feel free to post your work on the forum if youâd like me to take a look! That way, I can see exactly how I can help you until the mega-corrections are ready! đ
After reviewing the lesson, I tried to restructure the objects, to visualize the volumes, and to separate them. Itâs starting to take shape, and I can see things a little more clearly, but itâs still quite basic!!! We can now better discern what it might be!!! I struggled to define the volumes of the car; the fenders and wheels gave me some trouble, but Iâm not giving up because I think Iâve understood the fundamentals of this lesson. Iâm going to try to move on to the next one; if I get stuck, Iâll go back to this one.
Thanks again; even though itâs just a basic sketch, itâs great because Iâm starting to see the objects around me differently, Iâm starting to analyze them!
P.S.: The car sketch is still bothering me. I did my first sketch with the volumes and, by placing it as a template (thanks for that tip), I can now see lots of parallels, which makes my drawing more realistic! Awesome!
You know, most of the time when we realize we canât draw what we want, we blame our hand and say, âI canât draw well.â But in reality, it comes from the eye. The changes youâre experiencing are due to the fact that youâre now looking, thinking, and reflecting in a slightly different way, and these analytical skills will be reflected in your drawing.
So keep going! Your hand will naturally follow the rhythm as you gain more experience đ
Which databases are you referring to? Depending on what you mean, it's possible that I'm not familiar with them (in which case, I'd be very interested to learn more!). đ
Hello,
Well, here I am, ready to get started... I have a feeling it's going to take me quite a while before I can move on to the next lesson đ
But I'm really looking forward to putting all your excellent explanations into practice!!! đ
Thanks, Greg, your lessons are very motivating đ
Jacqueline
For these first exercises, should we just sketch the basic shapes so that we can vaguely identify what object is being depicted, or should we also include the details?
Iâm sending you my first two pieces đ
Your two drawings are very neat and clear, which is great! As for the details, it all depends on what you feel capable of doing! But there are no limits.
That said, before trying something more complex, I suggest you try the following exercise: try to separate each of the object's components (a bit like in an Ikea furniture assembly diagram â imagine you are creating the assembly instructions!).
The goal isn't to create something beautiful, but to train your eye to instinctively break down the shapes and to see things in a more analytical way. :-)

Would it be possible for you to post your analysis sketches for the course materials so that I can compare my work with that of a professional?
Thank you in advance, and best regards,
Eric

Greg

If itâs ugly, who cares? No pressure :-)
Good luck!

Your two drawings are very neat and clear, which is great! As for the details, it all depends on what you feel capable of doing! But there are no limits.

The goal isn't to create something beautiful, but to train your eye to instinctively break down the shapes and to see things in a more analytical way. :-)
Let me know if it works! đ
Good luck, and talk to you soon!
Dis-moi si ça marche ! đ
Bon courage et Ă bientĂŽt !
